EDP Mysteryland ’13

Summer just wouldn’t be the same without an Electric Deluxe outing at Mysteryland, and guess what? We’re back this August, bigger and better than ever. True to form we’re mixing things up with a rich blend of roster stars and label friends. From the EDLX cabinet we’re reeling out our favourite Scotsman, Gary Beck, and Motor Man Blackasteroid. And as for the friends? How does Stroboscopic head Lucy, the incomparable Shed, James Ruskin and Regis as O/V/R, and Italian stalwart Joseph Capriati sound? Local foursome ESHU completes yet another stellar techno line up, with EDLX honcho Speedy J of course in tow.

It’s been a year since Gary Beck dropped his debut album, Bring A Friend, on Glaswegian powerhouse Soma. Since then he’s touched town in the US and Asia, meanwhile making regular appearances throughout Europe. His penchant for energetic, stripped down techno make sets much-loved amongst the purists, Gary Beck knows how to command a floor. As for Bryan Black, AKA Blackasteroid, the last 12 months have seen Minneapolis man go from strength to strength in his newfound solo techno guise. His gritty soundscapes were put to the test back in April at the EDLX Berghain takeover, and whilst he’s just recently getting used to the DJ circuit (as former front man for live act Motor) he nevertheless has found strong footing.

Lucy has been an honorary EDLX artist for many years. His name has donned many an EDP line-up, and in June his label shall release the Berlin expat’s first collaboration with our own Speedy J, as Zeitgeber. As for artists needing little introduction: Shed, James Ruskin and Regis are up there with the best of them. Being consistently surprising and ever rewarding is a tough feat, and yet one René Pawlowitz achieves with ease as Shed and a myriad other pseudonyms. The German is just as rewarding behind the booth as on record, a real everyman’s favourite. Meanwhile Brits James Ruskin and Karl O’Connor, better known as Regis, have made names for themselves with their respective and highly regarded labels: Blueprint and Downwards. For the last seven years they have been playing and producing together as O/V/R, their increasingly random and more chaotic performance outlet.

Drumcode stalwart, Ibiza resident and festival regular Joseph Capriati concludes the list of heavy hitters, with fledging four-piece ESHU supply the local talent along with a broodier and slow burning techno style.
